The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my companion was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately told my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the courage or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
