Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
