Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
